Cardano Launches Native Token Standard With Built-In Regulatory Compliance Controls

The Cardano blockchain development team launched a new standard for native programmable tokens that enables automated regulatory compliance checks for digital asset transactions.
The Cardano Foundation introduced the CIP-0113 programmable token standard. The technology allows rules governing digital asset transactions to be embedded directly into token logic, automatically enforcing compliance requirements during issuance, transfers, and burning. The solution is designed for issuers of stablecoins, tokenized securities, and other regulated financial instruments.
The CIP-0113 standard allows issuers to establish rules governing digital assets, including:
Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) compliance checks.
Sanctions screening.
Asset freezing and seizure.
Restrictions on token transfers.
Tokens issued under the new standard remain native assets on the Cardano blockchain and are compatible with the network’s existing infrastructure. Issuers can use predefined rule sets or create their own. They can also update these rules in response to regulatory changes without modifying the underlying protocol.
The Swiss Capital Markets and Technology Association (CMTA) recognized CIP-113 as equivalent to CMTAT, allowing it to be used in the certification of tokenized shares under the association’s requirements.
CIP-113 underwent several independent security audits and didn’t require changes to the network’s underlying protocol. At launch, the new token standard was supported by Eternl and GeroWallet, the CardanoScan blockchain explorer, and the BloxBean platform. The Cardano Foundation also plans to develop an additional module for regulated securities.
Cardano Foundation CEO Frederik Gregaard emphasized that financial institutions need digital assets whose regulatory restrictions remain in effect with every transfer. According to Gregaard, CIP-0113 enables these controls to be enforced directly through blockchain technology.
In October 2026, the Cardano Foundation and Petrobras introduced blockchain solutions for verifying the environmental characteristics of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel.
