The authorities of Sichuan developed a draft regional plan for developing and implementing Metaverse technologies. The initiative involves the establishment of industrial parks for companies that develop virtual worlds and every possible encouragement of the industry’s development in the region.

China’s Ambitions for Metaverse Grow

The Sichuan Department of Economy and Information Technology called on the public to participate in the public discussion of the “Metaverse Industry Development Action Plan 2023-2025,” which aims to bring innovative growth and economic development to the region.

Among the main objectives are:

  • focusing on tech innovation in the Metaverse;
  • mastering new scientific and technological heights;
  • overcoming key technological challenges in the areas of interoperability and 3D modeling.

The key objectives of the proposed development plan include:

  • growing the Metaverse sector in the province to 250 billion yuan ($34 billion) by 2025;
  • establishing advanced research laboratories and innovation platforms in the field of Metaverse technologies;
  • creating 200 typical scenarios of Metaverse applications in various sectors;
  • actively promoting the digital transformation of major industrial sectors in the province;
  • expanding the Metaverse industry ecosystem.

Specifically, the government plan involves the creation of industrial parks for companies that develop virtual worlds. These areas will be of strategic importance to the development of the national Metaverse industry. Sichuan officials plan to support at least 15 leading Metaverse development companies over the next two years.

One of the most crucial points in the plan is the need to strengthen the innovation infrastructure, which involves:

  • accelerating the development of communications technologies (5G, 6G, and Wi-Fi 7);
  • exploring advanced computing technologies (high performance, cloud and smart computing);
  • supporting key areas (virtual (VR) and augmented reality (AR), digital twins);
  • developing new architectures for future types of computing (quantum, neuromorphic, and photonic);
  • developing advanced big data processing systems.

The Sichuan authorities also plan to introduce Metaverse technologies in such areas as culture, tourism, healthcare, education, and modern agriculture. The government’s plan includes creating tax incentives, training and talent attraction programs, and improving the legal system to support the development of the Metaverse industry.

You can participate in the discussion of the development plan until August 22.

Earlier, the Chinese authorities revealed plans to take a leading position in the global VR market by 2026.
