Coinbase Secures CFTC Approval to Launch Clearing Organization

The regulator approved the registration of Coinbase’s own U.S. clearing organization for the derivatives market. The new entity will allow the exchange to clear fully collateralized contracts using USDC, with settlement available 24/7.
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) approved the registration of Coinbase Clearing LLC as a Derivatives Clearing Organization (DCO), a regulated entity that clears derivatives transactions. According to Coinbase, it’s the first U.S. clearing organization designed from the outset to use the USDC stablecoin as collateral.
The approval completed the development of Coinbase’s own infrastructure for the regulated U.S. derivatives market. It now includes 3 key components:
- Coinbase Financial Markets, Inc., a Futures Commission Merchant (FCM) that provides brokerage services for derivatives.
- Coinbase Derivatives, LLC, a CFTC-regulated exchange operating as a Designated Contract Market (DCM).
- Coinbase Clearing LLC, a registered Derivatives Clearing Organization (DCO).
Coinbase now has its own infrastructure covering the main stages of regulated derivatives operations, from bringing products to market and facilitating trading to clearing and settlement.
Coinbase Clearing will be able to settle fully collateralized contracts directly. USDC will be used as collateral, while settlement will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The company expects its own clearing organization to speed up the development of new products and improve operational efficiency.
Coinbase doesn’t plan to move away from third-party partners entirely. The company will continue to work with existing counterparties in certain areas, including margined derivatives. Partner infrastructure will also support the planned launch of perpetual contracts tied to shares of individual companies.
Coinbase Chief Legal Officer Molly Abraham said the CFTC approval completed the company’s own infrastructure covering the full derivatives lifecycle. It will allow Coinbase to expand its offering of regulated derivatives backed by USDC, with round-the-clock settlement.
Coinbase views the registration of Coinbase Clearing as another step in expanding access to regulated financial products. Going forward, the company plans to strengthen its existing infrastructure and use it to build a scalable system for new on-chain products.
