The number of hacking attacks on cryptocurrency projects in Q2 2022 increased by 21% compared to Q1. 

Hackers Stole Almost $2 Billion in Crypto in Six Months

According to Atlas VPN, 96 crypto projects were hacked in Q2 2022. Compared to Q1 of this year, the number of hacks rose by 21%. As a result, attackers managed to steal approximately $1.98 billion. 

It is worth noting that hackers managed to carry out 237 attacks on cryptocurrency projects throughout 2021, and in just two quarters of 2022, attackers have already performed 175 hacks. This figure is 94% higher compared to the same period in 2021, when attackers hacked 90 crypto projects. We can state that the crime rate in the cryptocurrency space is on the rise. 

As of July 6, 2022, the Ethereum ecosystem suffered the most due to the attacks. Since the beginning of the year, it has suffered 32 attacks, and the total amount of losses was about $1 billion. Solana was in second place — about $394 million was stolen from its projects in five hacking attacks. BNB Chain was the leader in the number of hacks, having been attacked 47 times, causing about $141 million in damage.  

The NFT sector faced 45 hacks by the end of Q2 2022. Thus, the ecosystem’s popularity among hackers increased by 125% compared to Q1 2022.

The most notable hack in 2022 was the attack on the Ronin Network sidechain that led to the loss of about 174,000 ETH and USDC worth $25.5 million. The Horizon Bridge cross-chain protocol was recently attacked, resulting in the theft of about $100 million in assets.
