HSBC to Test Government and Corporate Bond Tokenization in the U.K.

HSBC became the first institution to receive approval for full scale testing of securities tokenization under the U.K.’s regulatory sandbox, including Digital Gilt Instrument (DIGIT) government bonds.

HSBC Bank received approval from the Bank of England (BoE) to launch operations within the Digital Securities Sandbox (DSS), a dedicated regulatory environment for testing and implementing securities tokenization solutions. The bank will conduct operations through its HSBC Orion blockchain platform, which received Digital Securities Depository (DSD) status within the sandbox.

The Digital Securities Sandbox launched in 2024 as a joint initiative by the Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). The framework provides participants with a regulated environment for the practical deployment of new technologies in the securities market, including distributed ledger technology (DLT) based solutions.

HSBC Orion will support the issuance, administration, and settlement of tokenized securities, including DIGIT government bonds and corporate debt instruments.

Patrick George, Global Head of Markets & Securities Services at HSBC, said the bank welcomed the regulator’s decision and expected to participate in the first pilot issuance of DIGIT government bonds. He said the project would mark an important milestone in the development of the U.K.’s digital asset market.

HSBC Orion launched in January 2023 and has facilitated more than $5 billion in digital bond issuances to date.

Earlier, the U.K. Chancellor announced that the first issuance of DIGIT government bonds is scheduled for early 2027. HSBC Orion was previously selected as the platform for issuing the instrument.
