S&P Dow Jones Indices Launches Digital Asset Index for Institutional Investors

S&P Dow Jones Indices introduced a dedicated index that will serve as a benchmark for institutional investors allocating capital to digital assets based on fundamental metrics.
S&P Dow Jones Indices, one of the world’s largest index providers, and digital asset investment firm Pantera Capital announced the launch of the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index. The new index is designed to measure the digital asset market using a methodology based on fundamental metrics instead of the market popularity of individual tokens.
Unlike most existing cryptocurrency indexes, which focus on price performance, market capitalization, or asset popularity, the new index applies selection rules similar to those used in traditional equity benchmarks. It includes only digital assets and companies that demonstrate real-world adoption and generate actual revenue. This methodology is intended to identify projects with proven economic value and strong underlying fundamentals.
According to its developers, the index will provide institutional investors with a more transparent and structured framework for evaluating blockchain-based assets. It can also serve as a reference benchmark for new investment products and for asset managers building actively managed digital asset portfolios.
S&P Dow Jones Indices CEO Cathy Clay said the index brings to the digital asset market the same principles used to construct benchmark indexes such as the S&P 500. The methodology relies on projects’ economic metrics and analytics from the Artemis platform, allowing investors to focus on the fundamental value of assets instead of short-term market trends.
Pantera Capital Founder and Managing Partner Dan Morehead said one of the biggest challenges for institutional investors in the crypto market remains determining an appropriate capital allocation strategy. In his view, the new index is designed to identify the digital assets and infrastructure projects with the greatest practical relevance and long-term potential.
The launch of the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index reflects the growing maturity of the digital asset market. According to the companies, that trend is supported by broader adoption of blockchain technology, greater regulatory clarity across key markets, and steadily increasing institutional participation.
S&P Dow Jones Indices has also been actively involved in tokenization initiatives. In partnership with Kaiko, the company tokenized the iBoxx U.S. Treasuries index family. It also supported Dinari in the tokenization of the S&P Digital Markets 50 financial index.
