Visa to Integrate Payment Services for AI Agents Into the OpenAI Ecosystem

Visa will integrate its payment solutions into the OpenAI ecosystem to support agentic commerce. The initiative will enable secure, automated payments initiated by AI agents on behalf of users.
Payments giant Visa announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI, one of the leading U.S. artificial intelligence companies. Under the agreement, Visa will provide OpenAI with access to its global payments network, tokenization technologies, payment credential capabilities, and security infrastructure for transactions conducted in environments where users interact with AI agents.
The integration is part of the Visa Intelligent Commerce initiative, which aims to expand digital payment capabilities through AI agent integration. Through the partnership, developers and merchants will be able to use payment processing solutions for AI agent-initiated transactions within OpenAI services, leveraging a unified infrastructure for authorization, risk management, and fraud prevention.
According to the companies, all transactions will operate within parameters predefined by users. These include spending limits, merchant category restrictions, and additional payment approval mechanisms. Transactions will rely on tokenized Visa credentials, as well as real-time transaction monitoring and fraud detection systems.
Jack Forestell, Chief Product and Strategy Officer at Visa, said the company is focused on building infrastructure that will allow AI agents to participate safely in economic activity and initiate transactions on behalf of users. Marco Mahrus, Head of Partnerships, Commerce at OpenAI, said integration with the Visa Intelligent Commerce platform will help create a transparent, user-controlled framework for AI agent payments.
Earlier, Visa launched Intelligent Commerce Connect, a solution that enables businesses to deploy AI agents in e-commerce through a single integration. The company also introduced Visa CLI, a tool designed to facilitate payments initiated by AI agents.
