National Program Launched in U.S. to Accelerate Scientific Development Using AI

A new federal research initiative is launched in the U.S. aimed at leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), supercomputers, and government data sets to speed up technological progress in the country.
U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order initiating the Genesis Mission, a national research program centered on the use of AI technologies. The initiative aims to unify federal scientific data, the computing power of national laboratories, and new AI systems into a single infrastructure designed to boost the nation’s competitiveness in energy, biology, and national security.
According to the order, the Department of Energy (DoE) is tasked with developing the American Science and Security Platform, a centralized system that will integrate supercomputers, secure cloud-based AI environments, scientific datasets, simulation tools, and automated laboratory complexes. The platform’s main purpose is to enable controlled training of AI models and real-time managed experimentation. It’ll be subject to federal standards for classification, export controls, and cybersecurity. External companies and researchers will gain access only after thorough vetting.
The Department of Energy must, within 90 days, identify the federal and cloud computing infrastructure to be used; within 120 days present the first datasets and AI models; and within 240 days complete an analysis of robotic laboratories. The first demonstration capabilities are expected within 270 days.
The Assistant to the President for Science and Technology (APST), one of the White House’s key science advisors, is appointed coordinator for the Genesis Mission. They’ll work through the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), the main interagency body responsible for coordinating scientific and technological initiatives across the federal government.
As part of the Genesis Mission, the following will be created:
- Unified mechanisms for aligning AI programs across federal agencies. The DoE, NASA, NIH, NSF, and the Department of Defense will synchronize their AI strategies and infrastructure to avoid duplication and accelerate research.
- Federal competitions and grant programs to attract private companies to develop scientific AI tools and new equipment.
- Partnerships with universities and research centers, which will become part of the shared platform for data, experiments, and AI models.
- International initiatives in energy, biomedicine, climate research, materials science, and other strategic areas.
White House representatives emphasize that every AI model under the Genesis Mission will undergo mandatory experimental validation. Any discrepancies between predictions and instrument data will be corrected through iterative refinement. The project will not use chatbots, only large-scale neural networks.
