Espanyol became the world’s first soccer club to begin large-scale integration of crypto payments into its commercial processes. Crypto Snack acts as the project’s technical partner.
Espanyol, a professional soccer club playing in La Liga, became the first sports organization to implement large-scale cryptocurrency payments with the active participation of Crypto Snack. This was reported in the relevant press release, available to CoinsPaid Media.
RCD Espanyol (RCDE) will allow fans and match attendees at the team’s home stadium to use more than 30 different cryptocurrencies to make online payments and offline purchases. For example, cryptocurrencies will be available to pay for team merchandise and tickets. Among other things, SNACK, Crypto Snack’s native token, will be accessible for payment.
The current introduction is only the first phase. Future plans include installing crypto ATMs at Cornellà El Prat, the team’s home stadium.
“The team is thrilled to be a pioneering football club and the first to bring widespread cryptocurrency payments to the sport,” said Toni Alegre, Vice Principal at RCD Espanyol. According to him, Crypto Snack provided technical implementation and support for the project, as well as expert guidance.
“This partnership will accelerate our plans to make cryptocurrency payments viable and scalable in the real world,” said Stuart Morrison, CEO of Crypto Snack. The company plans to develop its partnerships with various sports teams and organizations to help grow the demand for digital assets in the sports industry and beyond.
The company’s plans build on a strategic investment partnership with GEM Digital Limited, which has pledged to invest $50 million in Crypto Snack’s development. Financial support has allowed the company to improve its own payment infrastructure and partner with leading crypto exchanges. Among the other successes is the fact that the SNACK token was the first crypto-asset that appeared in the FIFA series, printed on Espanyol players’ kits in FIFA 23.
