Finland is using specially designed Bitcoin mining devices that integrate into the district heating system and allow households to be heated while mining BTC.
Hashlabs Mining, a company that specializes in Bitcoin mining infrastructure, presented a project that enables the generation of heat with WhatsMiner M63 mining units using specially designed hydro-cooling systems.
The proposed system transfers the heat generated by the mining equipment through a network of insulated pipes from a centralized source to end users. As a result, industrial BTC mining can be used as an element of a district heating system.
Political stability and nuclear power, which accounts for 43% of the country’s total electricity generation, make Finland an ideal location for such a project. Hashlabs Mining already integrated two mining centers into the district heating system and is working on integrating a third.
Similar projects have been in operation in other countries for years. In early 2022, mining company MintGreen and Lonsdale Energy Corporation (LEC) agreed on cooperation, under which it was planned to heat North Vancouver with the help of recovered energy released during Bitcoin mining.
