JPMorgan Assesses Crypto Market Outlook and Asset Tokenization Potential

The global cryptocurrency market exceeded $2.5 trillion, while the value of tokenized assets reached around $40 billion. JPMorgan analysts see potential for further growth in digital assets, supported by clearer regulations, expanding financial infrastructure, and interest from major investors.

J.P. Morgan Asset Management published its 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions report, examining the outlook for financial markets over the next 10 to 15 years. The analysts compared the size of the cryptocurrency market to the market capitalization of Switzerland’s stock market and the total value of the global private credit market.

Growth of Crypto Infrastructure and Tokenization

The analysts identified several factors supporting the development of the digital asset market:

  1. Greater regulatory clarity. More clearly defined legal frameworks make it easier for professional financial market participants to engage with cryptocurrencies.
  2. Broader investment options. Investors are gaining access to exchange-traded funds (ETFs), futures, options, and shares of publicly traded cryptocurrency companies.
  3. Expanding financial infrastructure. Bank-grade digital asset custody services and financing markets are creating more opportunities for institutional investors.
  4. Tokenization of traditional assets. The value of assets represented by digital tokens, including money market funds, is estimated at around $40 billion. Analysts see potential for rapid growth in this segment.

The report didn’t provide a numerical forecast for future growth in the tokenized asset market.

Institutional Investor Interest in Digital Assets

The study also cited findings from a survey of wealthy investors published in J.P. Morgan Private Bank’s 2026 Global Family Office Report.

According to the survey, about 10% of family office clients surveyed reported holding cryptocurrencies and other crypto assets in their investment portfolios. Another finding pointed to potential demand: 17% of respondents planned to prioritize cryptocurrencies and other digital assets.

The results indicated interest in digital assets among some major private investors but didn’t establish the total value of their cryptocurrency holdings.

JPMorgan Assesses Bitcoin’s Potential Returns Over 10 Years

Despite the cryptocurrency market’s development, JPMorgan analysts continue to view BTC as a speculative asset that could serve as a hedge against monetary easing.

JPMorgan outlined three scenarios for Bitcoin’s potential average annual returns over a 10-year period:

  • Bull case: A 16.6% annual gain.
  • Base case: A 10% annual gain.
  • Bear case: An 11.2% annual decline.

The estimates were based on a model incorporating the money supply and BTC supply, Bitcoin’s potential role as an alternative store of value alongside gold, and adoption of the Bitcoin technology. These factors carried weights of 65%, 30%, and 5%, respectively.

The analysts emphasized that these scenarios didn’t constitute a comprehensive forecast of Bitcoin’s returns. Its value depends on technological development, cryptocurrency adoption, regulation, and market liquidity.

Why Bitcoin Isn’t Yet a Reliable Portfolio Diversifier

JPMorgan noted that Bitcoin’s volatility declined over time, but its correlations with other financial assets remained unstable. This makes it difficult to use BTC to reduce overall investment portfolio risk.

According to the analysts, Bitcoin often behaves like a high-risk asset sensitive to growth in the global money supply. Under certain market conditions, investors also treat it as a digital equivalent of gold.

The analysts considered it premature to incorporate Bitcoin into standard long-term asset allocation models. That assessment could change if volatility declines further, correlations with other assets stabilize, regulatory clarity improves, and market liquidity increases.
