Mastercard Unveils Risk Assessment Tool for Stablecoin Payments

Mastercard announced a new solution designed to detect fraud, sanctions risks, and other threats associated with stablecoin payments.
Mastercard Unveils Risk Assessment Tool for Stablecoin PaymentsGlobal payment network Mastercard introduced Stablecoin Security, a new risk analysis tool that combines data from traditional payment systems with blockchain analytics.
Stablecoin Security allows financial institutions to assess risks throughout the entire payment lifecycle, from initiating a fiat currency transfer to moving funds across a blockchain network. The system generates a risk score before a payment is completed, allowing banks to identify suspicious transactions before stablecoins are sent.
Mastercard attributed the need for comprehensive monitoring to the growing complexity of stablecoin transactions. According to a study by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), which examined 593 million stablecoin transfers across 141 million transactions on Ethereum in 2025, nearly 60% weren’t direct transfers between 2 parties but involved complex, multistep structures.
The new product operates through a platform-agnostic API and combines several categories of data to assess risks, including:
Payment context and the origin of transferred funds;
Connections between transaction participants and individuals or entities subject to sanctions;
Indicators of fraud and other financial crimes;
Movement of funds across blockchain networks and associated risks.
The analysis results, including risk scores generated before payment execution, can be integrated into banks’ existing fraud prevention, compliance monitoring, and investigation management systems. This means financial institutions won’t need to build separate risk management infrastructure for stablecoin transactions.
The project’s first partners are infrastructure providers Borderless.xyz, which offers financial institutions a unified interface for connecting to licensed stablecoin payment providers, and Keyrails, which specializes in large-scale cross-border trade payments. Both companies participate in Mastercard’s Start Path Blockchain and Digital Assets accelerator program.
The solution will initially be available in North America, with a global commercial launch scheduled for 2027. Mastercard plans to expand the availability of Stablecoin Security later, including through integration with the infrastructure of stablecoin payment provider BVNK, which the company acquired in August 2026.
The new solution will complement Mastercard’s existing digital asset products, including Crypto Credential and Crypto Secure. While those tools focus on specific aspects of verifying participants and cryptocurrency transactions, Stablecoin Security is designed to provide end-to-end risk assessment across fiat and blockchain infrastructure.
According to Ann Johnson, Mastercard’s executive vice president of security solutions, combining payment data with blockchain analytics will help financial institutions make more informed decisions when processing digital asset transactions.
Mastercard also recently introduced the Mastercard Global Money Platform, which brings fiat currency and stablecoin transactions together through a single API. The company also announced plans to expand its offline payment technology across the European market.
