Developers of crypto wallet MetaMask automated the system for security alerts during transactions, expanding its functionality. This feature is now available by default for all web extension users and also accessible in the mobile app version.
The MetaMask team, renowned for its popular non-custodial crypto wallet, announced the automation of the security alert feature for both web extension and mobile app users.
Previously, transaction security alerts were exclusive on the Ethereum network, where they were integrated on January 29, 2024. MetaMask developers extended its integration to several blockchain networks, including BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, and Linea.
The transaction security alert feature, developed in November 2023 in collaboration with Blockaid, a cybersecurity monitoring company for the Web3 space, aims to alert users of potential fund loss during ongoing transactions. The feature analyzes transactions, identifies malicious patterns, and alerts users to potential asset security breaches.
The alert functionality now operates automatically in MetaMask browser extensions. Users of the mobile app will need to enable its support in the settings.
The project team integrated security features due to significant growth in the number of the crypto wallet users. MetaMask’s monthly active users increased from 19 million in September 2023 to 30 million by the end of January 2024.
According to Bárbara Schorchit, Senior Product Manager at MetaMask, thanks to the alert feature, the team protected approximately $1.15 million of user funds during the Ledger Connect exploit.
MetaMask was recognized as the most secure crypto wallet by cybersecurity experts.
