One of South Korea's Largest Financial Groups Moves Into Digital Finance

South Korean financial group Mirae Asset plans to expand into digital finance through its acquired cryptocurrency exchange, Digital X. The group set a target of 150 trillion won ($109 billion) for the new business.

Mirae Asset Financial Group, one of South Korea’s largest financial groups specializing in asset management, investment banking, insurance, and brokerage services, identified digital finance as one of its key areas for future growth. The group plans to bring cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, tokenized assets, and digital securities together on the Digital X platform, which was created on the basis of South Korean crypto exchange Korbit.

Mirae Asset founder and chairman Park Hyeon-joo said Digital X should become one of the core elements of the group’s “Mirae Asset 3.0” growth strategy. The company plans to leverage its existing client base to scale the new business.

Mirae Asset’s total client assets stand at around 1.5 quadrillion won ($1.1 trillion). In July 2026, the group’s nonfinancial unit Mirae Asset Consulting acquired 97.15% of Korbit. The cryptocurrency exchange was subsequently renamed Digital X.

Mirae Asset’s management plans to make its digital asset business profitable as early as 2027. To expand operations, the group is considering providing Digital X with up to 300 billion won ($220 million) in additional funding. A third-party share placement worth 200 billion to 300 billion won ($146 million to $220 million) could take place in the first quarter of 2027. The final amount of funding, however, will depend on the platform’s financial performance.

Digital X will focus on four areas:

  • cryptocurrencies;
  • stablecoins;
  • real-world asset (RWA) tokenization;
  • security token offerings (STOs).

In particular, the company plans to tokenize gold, silver, and electricity, as well as develop financial products and services based on blockchain infrastructure.

Mirae Asset plans to develop Digital X beyond a cryptocurrency trading platform. The group intends to use it as the foundation for on-chain financial infrastructure, make its own investments in digital assets, and issue related financial products.

Over the long term, Mirae Asset plans to create a global investment platform combining traditional and digital assets. Digital X is expected to become the core infrastructure for the group’s digital finance business.

South Korean authorities previously officially included the development of blockchain technology and the digital asset market in the country’s economic growth strategy.
