Clinical trial data from the American Mayo Clinic medical center will soon be stored in blockchain. The technology will avoid data falsification and increase its value.

U.S. Clinical Trial Data Stored on Blockchain

Dutch blockchain startup Triall announced a partnership with the Mayo Clinic medical center in the U.S. to develop the eClinical platform. The innovative tool is designed to optimize Mayo’s two-year clinical study of pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Blockchain will enable the clinic to efficiently manage data from the study, which includes information on more than 500 patients from ten research centers.

According to Triall, this partnership is intended to be the first step in a global transformation of clinical trial data storage, ensuring it is decentralized. Blockchain-based eClinical software will:

  • collect and capture data;
  • manage paperwork;
  • provide research monitoring;
  • record consent from the medical center’s patients.

According to a Mayo Clinic spokesperson, the collaboration with Triall will not only systematize research data, but also increase regulatory and stakeholder confidence in clinical trial results. All data will be viewable and evaluable, but it will not be possible to change it once entered into the chain, thus avoiding falsification.

Blockchain technology is rapidly gaining momentum in various fields. For example, blockchain technology is designed to solve the trust issue between buyers and gold miners and has the potential to transform the commercial real estate market. It is also being used to make civil aviation more environmentally friendly, and Dell has launched a global blockchain-based environmental initiative

Some countries actively adopt blockchain in the public sector. For instance, India has introduced a blockchain-based platform for monitoring securities and covenants, and the Goa Police will move its workflow into the blockchain. Colombia is also planning to launch a blockchain-based land titling project.
