New Cryptographic Protocol to Boost Efficiency of Blockchains

In his blog, Vitalik Buterin, Co-Founder of Ethereum, detailed the benefits of the new Circle STARK cryptographic protocol, which was successfully used within several blockchain networks, including Polygon and Starkware.

According to Vitalik, using Circle STARK will significantly improve the security and efficiency of blockchain protocols. The technology’s essence is the use of small fields to increase the speed of DLT systems. The Circle STARK protocol can speed up the completion of the proof process without compromising the network’s security.

STARK (Scalable Transparent Arguments of Knowledge) is a cryptographic protocol that provides proofs of computation without the need to trust a third party. It’s used to create zero-knowledge proof (ZKP). STARK is characterized by high performance, scalability, and resistance to quantum attacks.

Traditional STARK-based protocols work with 256-bit fields, which, while secure, are often inefficient. On the other hand, Circle STARK uses smaller fields, resulting in lower computational costs and higher proof rates. Vitalik wrote that this approach makes blockchain network processes more efficient.

Buterin also noted that traditionally, fields have a limited number of possible values and can be subject to brute force attacks. Small fields in Circle STARK perform multiple random checks and utilize extension fields, increasing the set of values that attackers must guess.

Vitalik praised the prospects of technology development, emphasizing that Circle STARK offers more flexibility and versatility within blockchain development, creating a basis for increasing the efficiency of computing processes.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently said that the blockchain network of the largest altcoin is potentially vulnerable to quantum technologies and needs to be protected from them.
