In partnership with ClimateCHECK, BioE and the Iota Foundation, Dell has joined forces to create a real-time, blockchain-based carbon footprint tracking system.
Dell Technologies announced a collaboration with the Iota Foundation, ClimateCHECK and BioE to work on a brand new carbon tracking system. The system will be based on open-source blockchain technology, making its data as reliable as possible and allowing a wide range of professionals and businesses to participate in the project.
The Iota Foundation is a non-profit fund that runs the crypto project IOTA (MIOTA) based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and develops a technological ecosystem built on the distributed ledger (DLT). ClimateCHECK is a technology company specializing in climate change issues, and BioE is a venture focused on sustainable energy and composting.
The companies have developed their own DLT-based tool for carbon dioxide emission measurement, reporting and verification (MRV). Few technical details of the project have been provided. The only thing that is known is that the carbon emissions data will come in real-time from sensors and will also be recorded manually. The system is already being tested at the BioE facility. Data will be recorded and processed using the Dell PowerEdge and Data Confidence Fabric (DCF) services, as well as the Alvarium project.
Environmental issues are quite acute for the cryptocurrency industry. For example, the New York State Assembly passed a bill in late April to ban Bitcoin mining by companies that do not use renewable energy sources. Crypto Carbon Ratings Institute conducted a study on the environmental impact of blockchain networks, finding out the exact amount of carbon dioxide emitted during the operation of major cryptocurrency projects.
