Samsung Plans to Launch Infrastructure for Stablecoins and AI Payments

Samsung’s IT division started talks with the operator of South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Upbit, on jointly developing infrastructure for stablecoins, digital assets, and AI-powered payment services.

Samsung SDS, the IT arm of Samsung Group, one of South Korea’s largest technology conglomerates, is considering a partnership with Dunamu, the operator of the Upbit cryptocurrency exchange, to jointly develop infrastructure for stablecoin adoption. The companies are also discussing solutions for the digital asset market and AI-powered payment models. Samsung SDS CEO Lee Jun Hee disclosed the plans during the company’s Q2 2026 earnings presentation.

According to Lee, Samsung SDS already built expertise in digital asset infrastructure through its participation in the development of South Korea’s national tokenized securities platform and through comprehensive testing of the full stablecoin lifecycle with South Korean financial institutions. The company now expects to strengthen those capabilities through cooperation with Dunamu and expand its presence in the digital asset infrastructure market.

Separately, Samsung Electronics recently announced plans to expand Samsung Wallet’s functionality by adding stablecoin support to the application.

In May 2026, Samsung Securities, Samsung SDS, and Samsung Card agreed to jointly acquire a 4% stake in Dunamu. During the earnings presentation, Lee said the investment was strategic rather than financial. According to him, the companies plan to jointly develop new digital financial infrastructure models by combining Samsung SDS’ cloud technologies, IT services, and cybersecurity solutions with Dunamu’s blockchain expertise.

Samsung SDS also announced a large-scale expansion of its AI infrastructure. The company plans to increase its data center capacity from the current 110 MW to 230 MW by 2029 and exceed 800 MW by 2031, while expanding its AI infrastructure alongside its digital finance business.

Samsung has continued investing in blockchain projects and exploring ways to expand the digital capabilities of its devices. In 2023, the company worked with the Bank of Korea (BOK) to develop technology for secure money transfers and payments using a central bank digital currency (CBDC) through Samsung mobile devices.
