Tether Operations Limited plans to release the stablecoin GBPT pegged to the British pound in early July.

Tether to Release GBPT Pegged to Sterling

Tether, the issuer of the largest stablecoin USDT, announced the launch of a new financial instrument — the stablecoin GBPT, whose value will be pegged to the British pound (GBP) at a ratio of 1 to 1. The asset is to be issued on Ethereum.

GBPT will be the fifth stablecoin issued by Tether, including the already mentioned “cryptocurrency dollar” USDT. Tether’s lesser-known stablecoins are:

  • EURT, pegged to the euro;
  • CNHT, pegged to the Chinese yuan;
  • MXNT, pegged to the Mexican peso.

The decision to release GBPT was made amid the British government’s statements, according to which the Foggy Albion will become the global crypto hub. There have also been plans to include stablecoins in the legal framework of the U.K. to legalize their use as a means of payment.
