Vitalik Buterin Shared Thoughts on Ethereum Development

Vitalik Buterin, Co-Founder of Ethereum, shared his thoughts on the project’s future development after the Dencun update. In his opinion, as the mainnet becomes more robust, developers’ critical attention will shift to L2 projects and the application and user development layers. As a result, this will lead to further lower fees and more mainstream adoption of Ethereum Web3 products.

Among the main challenges for the near future, Buterin highlights the following:

  1. Expanding block BLOB space to 16MB per slot.
  2. Increasing the efficiency of data space utilization in L2 projects.
  3. Refinement of data availability sampling (DAS) technology.
  4. Improved security and decentralization techniques for the EVM-enabled project ecosystem.

Vitalik compares Ethereum in 2022 to an airplane whose team replaced its engines mid-flight. He compares the 2023 updates and the Dencun hard fork to replacing wings. In his opinion, the introduction of Verkle trees is the only remaining truly meaningful update. The rest of the improvements are more like replacing minor details.

The Ethereum team still has to solve many issues concerning scaling. At the same time, Vitalik states that the project already turned from just a financial ecosystem into a much larger independent decentralized technology stack.

Vitalik Buterin recently described options for reducing the maximum block size in the Ethereum mainnet to increase the project’s scalability.
