TON blockchain network developers announced the launch of a message encryption feature that increases privacy in user communications.

TON Adds Encrypted Messaging

The TON Foundation, a developer of the blockchain network The Open Network (TON), introduced a new message encryption feature on the blockchain that allows TON users to leave private messages in transactions.

The TON network had previously allowed users to leave messages in transactions, however, they were public. The new feature allows these messages to be encrypted, making them available only to recipients. TON’s core developer, Anatoliy Makosov, said the feature is designed to personalize transactions. It allows text comments to be added to transfers, such as “for coffee” or “happy birthday,” making the interaction more personalized. He also noted that the feature could be helpful when traditional messengers fail, providing a reliable and secure private communication method.

Currently, sending encrypted messages is available through several cryptocurrency wallets, including MyTonWallet, OpenMask, and TON Wallet. In addition, the feature will be added to the Tonkeeper mobile wallet in upcoming updates.

The Telegram messenger team created The Open Network, but in July 2020, a hard fork was carried out, the project was transferred to open source and given to the community, which continued to work on TON. For example, earlier this year, the TON Foundation community sought to ensure the transparency of native token issuance by initiating a vote to block the addresses of inactive Toncoin miners. The project team has also become a technical partner to the governments of Cameroon, Congo, and DRC in cryptocurrency and blockchain technology projects.
